The Journey of Creating Sculpture modeled after the pictures below

Negotiation & Planning

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (24. March 2018)

Hello Diana,
Thank you for an opportunity to serve you.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your request. This is because I had traveled to neighboring country Tanzania in a remote rural with no network access till yesterday I returned back to my studio in Nairobi.

I have seen the two photos you sent, but I need detailed information
(1) On if you want them done two fighting figures per piece as the photos shows,
(2) Or if you want a single figure and then specify particular figures you need carved from each photo.
(3) specify the sizes in each sculpture.

According to the proportions of the flying body parts in fighting action, its better they be carved in hard Wood, (Olive Wood)
Once I get this information, I will then give you the price offer.

I promise you, I will do it to the best of your interest.

Thank you.

Naftal Mageto.

Diana (25. March 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for looking into creating the sculpture. I would like to have one sculpture which includes both fighters at the same time but none of the backgrounds. I uploaded both pictures as I wasn't sure which one works better.

On size: I would expect the sculpture to be somewhere between 20-30 cm high, but am open for suggestions as to what's practical. This sculpture is a present for my Taekwondo Master who has supported and taught me for the past 8 years. The sculpture will likely be showcased in our Taekwondo center, so should not be too small, but also not be too big.

Olive wood sounds great.

Really looking forward to your proposal, many thanks for taking the time to look into this.

Best
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (25. March 2018)

Thank you Diana for the explanation.

Then on size issue, I suggest 36cm to be a bit physically visible for the showcase.

The real photo in white is clear for me.

Naftal.

Diana (26. March 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your feedback. I have thought about the size a bit. I would rather like to have a smaller sculpture, so between 20-25 cm. I don't want to overpower the other presents my TKD master has received from other students. I hope this is doable?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (27. March 2018)

Thank you for your response.
I will now work on your final decision on size.

I now wish to present the price cost based on the final agreed size of a maximum 25cm which is about 10".

Art pricing unlike in common craft products, is based on the nature of creative challenges involved for one to deliver technically an accurate work.

Creative challenges here, is about matching proportions of the two fighting figures as they look concentrated towards each other as well as give the whole piece the emotional character that's associated with the Taekwondo game.

I promise to deliver to the best of my creative ability.

Naftal.

Diana (31. March 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your quote. I am certain that you would deliver an extraordinary piece of art, however, this clearly exceeds the amount of money I would like to spend on this present.

Many thanks for your quote and all the best
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (31. March 2018)

Hi Diana,
Its my happiness to serve every client who seek my artistic service to the best I can.

Though the sculpture comprises double images that require careful detailing in terms of proportionate moving parts in the composition to meet the standard quality work, I also find it important to consider your purchasing power.

I hope this reduction meets your intended price bracket, and therefore look forward into serving you.

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (4. April 2018)

Hi Diana,
Working time reduced down because I already found ready material, and therefore time supposed to be spent in looking for the material was subtracted.

Decision for futher price reduction was arrived upon the spirit to provide affordable service .

I look forward into delivering your work within the stipulated time.

Naftal.

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (6. April 2018)

Hi Diana,
I have already started sketching the Taekuondo sculpture, and the two photos are preliminary work done.

I will post more photos on Monday.

Naftal.

Diana (10. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Great! I cannot see any photos, though. Can you please post again?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (13. April 2018)

Hello Diana,
sorry I didn't know the first photos I posted recently didn't open.
I have posted more photos for updates showing the sculpture at the middle of undergoing detailing.

I would love to hear from you before I proceed to the finishing process.

Thank you

Naftal.

Diana (13. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Great progress! I really like to posture of the fighters. That is spot on. I am really happy about it.

As for the faces, I would hope for them to look more similar to the original than now. I somehow feel that the features could be more European. Also, could you please mimick the hairstyles more? The left fighter is my Taekwondo Master, it is important that he recognizes himself.

Really great progress. Many thanks again!
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (13. April 2018)

I didn't know you wanted exact portraits.

I thought was just an action, but let me do something.

Thank you for a quick response.

Naftal.

Diana (13. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

You can find more photos of my Taekwondo master here: www.zen-taekwondo.de. Maybe that helps with modelling the faces.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (17. April 2018)

Hi Diana,
am still working on the faces and will post photos by the weekend.

I will check more photos of your master as you directed.

However, the price of portraits are higher than a general image of an Artwork and may require addition.

At first I only focused on the general image of Taekwondo action because you forgotten to emphasize on actual portrait of a person.

I will post photos at the weekend after finalizing the facial detailing.

thank you for facilitation of more photos.

Naftal.

Diana (19. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your feedback. Just to clarify: Do you want me to share additional pictures of my master? Can you maybe share an email address? I seem to be unabke to uplpoad additional images on this pkatform.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (21. April 2018)

yes I needed additional photos especially the 3 sides of his face.

unfortunately I didn't find the in the link you provided.

I have been using the only one you provided originally, and will post the photo tomorrow because my phone has failed to upload.

but there will be additional amount to be added to agreed price for portrait work.

My Email: mnaftalm@gmail.com.

Diana (21. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your message and your continued engagement on the sculpture.

How much more will the extra work cost?

I have stored all pictures I have of my master here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1olDT9KaE4A1tX3zJKRzALCZ9YjEaArHU?usp=sharing

What about the other Taekwondo Fighter? I don't need portrait work. But he should look at least a bit similar.

Many thanks again
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (23. April 2018)

Hi Diana,
am still working on the fine details of the changes for the portrait. However, I didn't find any other important photo in the link you provided yet.
Am still using the original photo, and work will be finished on 28th April. I have uploaded new photos showing the work changes in progress.

Normally, portraits prices go twice the price of ordinary figures. But for now, you will add only ksh 18,000.
I will post the final photos when am done.

Thank you.

Naftal

Diana (26. April 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for the image.

The current state does not represent the original very well. At this stage I am concerned to spend even more money, as I might not be able to use it as a present. Do you see an opportunity to make it look more similar? If not, please do not continue as I do not want to spend more.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (1. May 2018)

Hi Diana,

sorry to discover that my recent response to you in this message did not go through.

I said don't worry about the additional money needed as a cost of capturing specifications of the image of your interest.

Sometimes we decide to shelf monetary values in Art and embark on the need to showcase talent rather than seeking value for Art, because one time the same client may return for another work with a better price or bring a friend for an Art service.

I decided as I did from the beginning that I will accept to take what you're able to provide for the work.

What I want now is 3 close taken photos of your master to enable me see clearly how he looks like.

just close photos of his face.

Diana (4. May 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks. I truely appreciate it.

Did you see the pictures I provided to you? I sent you a link to a folder with all the close up pictures I have.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (4. May 2018)

Hi Diana,
thanks for your response.

Yes I looked at the links you provided but didn't find any picture with clear facial exposer of the subject person.

it's better if you can find even two photos clearly showing the central face and one side view to capture his image correctly.

Naftal.

Diana (8. May 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Here are two pictures. I will get two more in the next days. Can you work with these?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (11. May 2018)

Hi Diana,
Thanks for the two pictures but I need the frontal face that is naturally calm without that big smile.

The smiling face does not allow me to capture his true mouth and does not go well with the action theme either.

But the side view one is ok even though I still need the right central face that is naturally calm without that big smile.

Thank you.

Diana (15. May 2018)

Hi Naftal,

I have uploaded additional images. I hope they enable you to continue the work on the sculpture.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (23. May 2018)

Hi Diana,
Sorry for delaying my response.

I did receive the additional photos you sent, and I have been studying them due to varying differences in them.

The first 2 photos you sent at the beginning are completely different from this additional photos.

That is why I didn't recognize them in the links you posted recently.

Age difference in the photos is perhaps reason.

I really wanted a calm quiet frontal face without such a wider smile.

However, I have already started working on what's available right now and will be able to update in 3 days time.

I started a fresh because the photos you sent are completely different from the original photos.
Naftal

Diana (28. May 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your feedback and your continued engagement!

All the fotos I recently posted have been taken within two weeks. Hope these help you conclude the project.

I am not quite sure whether there is a request in your recent feedback.

Please let me know, how the sculpture progresses.

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (30. May 2018)

Hi Diana,
Yes I received them all but I meant that the first one in white showing the action in the first two photos you sent at the beginning was taken when he was much younger.

Work is on even though I really wanted him in a calm front face without such a big smile.

I will send you photos in 2 days time.

thank you.

Diana (18. June 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Did you see all the pictures I uploaded? I think this qualifies a calm face. Can you work with them?

Could you please give me an update or send pictures?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (19. June 2018)

yes I saw the 6 photos you sent several weeks ago. My machine developed a problem, but I just received it back today.
Let me work on the given photos will get back with well worked image.

Sorry that it has taken time than was expected due to photos and machine issues. But will work it out well.

Naftal

Diana (9. July 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Do you have an update on progress for the sculpture?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (19. July 2018)

Hi Diana,
Sorry I have been sick for some time not been able to work till 3days ago when I felt recovering back to work.

The sculpture was at its rough sketch process when I stopped, but I have started working on fine details prior to start finishing.

I will post more photos in 7 days time.

Sorry for the delay.

Naftal

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (17. August 2018)

Hi Diana,

sorry I had eye problem which has taken time than I though was a small issue.

please see the photos as I embark on finishing details and then polishing to send you final full photos in 5 days time.

Naftal.

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (27. August 2018)

Dear Diana,

Sorry it has been a while sending my communication here.

Sorry the work has delayed than was expected, but this is due to a problem I developed with eyes.

I thought was a small issue that could go quickly, but unfortunately found it recurring.

Checked a doctor and will finalize with him to continue working to finish the piece.

I will communicate in a week's time to give you actual update of the piece.

Please bear with me and I promise to present a nice finished work.

Naftal.

Diana (1. September 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Many thanks for your continued engagement on the project.

It's difficult to provide feedback. I feel there is a certain resemblance, but without knowing I would not recognize him. It still does not really look like him.

Is there maybe a way to work with abstraction and try to model both heads to have resemblance but at the same time not work out all features in detail?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (2. September 2018)

Hi Diana,

Sorry for delaying in this particular work which was caused by my eye problems especially for small size pieces.

However, have been undergoing medical check which I hope will regain back soon.

I would like to get you clearly on whether you want to change from actual burst of a real image of your master in realistic form into Abstract form for both the two figures.

If that is the way you want it changed into Abstract faces, I will do it in a best way too because am specialized in Abstract forms as well.

Let me know if that is what you mean.

Thank you.

Naftal

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (7. October 2018)

Dear Diana,

sorry for the delay,.
The few photos i have posted are of the changed faces into semi abstract forms without definite bust.
however, am posting the final ones tomorrow after polishing the sculpture to bring out the clear colors of the material.

The pieces is at finishing stages with only polishing remaining to be done fully in 3 days time and will post the final photos immediately prior to submission..

Naftal

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (5. November 2018)

Hi Diana,
Here I present photos of the piece ready for submission.
Once again, sorry for the delay.

Naftal.

Diana (15. November 2018)

Hi Naftal,

Thank you. Did you exchange the heads? If so, could you please send the original ones with the statue?

Many thanks
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (29. November 2018)

Hi Diana,
Sorry I left Nairobi to take part in an international sculpture symposium taking place 600km away from Nairobi where I was invited as a participant.

Network communications from the symposium site is very low to extentI rarely access the web for communication.

However am set to return Nairobi on 10th next month to proceed with the submission of the sculpture.

No I just reworked on the same heads whipping out the realistic details to achieve the semi abstract nature of the facial features.

However, if you need me change the heads I will still do it immediately am back in Nairobi.

I left the sculpture back in Nairobi.

Naftal.

Diana (9. December 2018)

Dear Naftal,

Many thanks! Please send the statue as is. Many thanks for all your effort.

Best
Diana

Naftal Mageto Momanyi (9. December 2018)

Dear Diana,

Yes am travelling back to Nairobi tomorrow night and will be in Nairobi the following day on Tuesday.

I will submit the work for transportation.

Am really sorry for the delay which has never happened in my work before.

About Naftal Mageto Momanyi

Born in 1961, Naftal Mageto Momanyi am a self taught artist who’s love for fine art books through the Kenya National Library services and
long term association with professional art educators in East Africa turned my talent into an intellectual gear that enables me to create superlative works of intellectual artistic merit.Among major artistic events I have participated includes:an exhibition of contemporary East African Art at The Commonwealth Institute in London in 1984,the Kenya- Canada cultural exchange festival in 1986,and the 1994 traveling exhibition in 20 cities across the western Canada region.I was also the facilitator in the 1994 international sculptors festival, held in Weyburn Saskatchewan during my 6 Months residency in Canada. The inspiration for my art springs from the compelling desire to communicate my emotional experiences to the people using artistic images as a symbolic language through which information is conveyed based on topical themes. I create in multiple techniques ranging from realistic to abstract art forms and also carve portraits in stone. My works are original and the ability to create from a given story is my long time experience. Analytical detailing in form and subject contents aimed at emphasizing the dominance of a particular feeling in
the physical character of a sculpture is a crucial aspect in my work plan. I use a variety of stones, wood and casting.
