This Custom Blue Tie-Dye Tote Bag With AWM Label was made as a lightweight everyday carry bag with a white base, blue tie-dye pattern and a small front label featuring the initials AWM. It is a useful example for anyone exploring a custom tote bag with personalized branding, reinforced structure and simple travel-friendly styling.

  • Request: The project started with a white tote bag in a blue tie-dye finish, sized at roughly 14 inches wide by 15 inches high, with brown leather straps and a small front label showing AWM.
  • Final result: Evelyne Wanjiku delivered a finished tote in blue tie-dye fabric with the personalized AWM label added to the front, creating a casual custom bag with a clear handmade character.
  • Design details: The bag combined soft tie-dye fabric with leather strap accents and a compact rectangular label, keeping the look clean and easy to use while still making the initials visible.
  • Fit and use: Because the dyed fabric was light, the bag was reinforced with a layer of canvas inside and a board in the base so it would hold its shape better for everyday use and travel.
  • Process: This was completed as a collaborative make, with the fabric dyed first and then stitched into the final tote, and the finished project received positive feedback as “Beautifully made.”

The Journey of Creating Custom Blue Tie-Dye Tote Bag With AWM Label

Negotiation & Planning

Evelyne Wanjiku (7. August 2021)

Dear Nimu,

I am happy to respond to your request for a tie and dye tote bag.

We would like to try it on canvas and cotton and see which comes out better.

An artist will work on the tie and dye and will then bring it to our workshop for stitching it will thus be a collaborative project.

Do you have a preference in terms of size?

Best regards,

Evelyne

Nimu Muriu (7. August 2021)

Hello,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
Regarding size
Roughly:
Width: 14 in
Height: 15 in

Colour: blue (like the picture) white canvas
Label: like the attached image ( with AWM)

Evelyne Wanjiku (7. August 2021)

You are welcome.

We will look for good canvas on Monday and let you know. The artist tells me canvas isn't as absorbent as cotton so we will try both fabrics and you can see which will look better

Have a lovely weekend.

Nimu Muriu (8. August 2021)

Alright, thank you.
Is it possibly for the bag to be ready before next week Friday, 13th?

Evelyne Wanjiku (8. August 2021)

Hi Nimu,

As it's a collaborative effort, I can't really give timelines. We have to wait for the artist to work on the fabric and once we are satisfied with the result, we will stitch.

We will keep updating you. She starts dying tomorrow. Let's see how that turns out.

Dear Nimu,

I hope your weekend was good.the artist has delivered the fabric.

Please see attached a photo of the tie and dye fabric.

I hope you like it. Looking forward to your feedback so that stitching can begin tomorrow morning

Have a lovely evening.

Nimu Muriu (10. August 2021)

Hello,

Thank you it looks great. Will it be hard enough to be a bag?

Evelyne Wanjiku (10. August 2021)

Hi Nimu,

Thanks for the quick response.

The material is very light, we will have to reinforce it so that it's hard enough to be a bag.

We will use a layer of light canvas on the inside and a board at the bottom.

I hope that is fine with you. Let me know if you have more suggestions..

Best regards,

Eva

Nimu Muriu (10. August 2021)

That’s great, thank you. Looking forward to seeing it done.

Evelyne Wanjiku (11. August 2021)

Dear Nimu,

I hope you're well. Please see the attached photos of your bag. Let me know what you think about it.

Nimu Muriu (12. August 2021)

Hello,

Thank you it looks good. May the straps be moved slightly higher?

Evelyne Wanjiku (12. August 2021)

Hi Nimu,

Thank you for your feedback. I guess you mean you want the straps to be less than 2 inches into the body now. I wonder if you have a prefered length that we can use.

Changing the straps means we undo the bag, remove the lining adjust the straps and then stitch the bag again.

Is the strap width ok or might you have a prefered size?

Looking forward to your response.

Nimu Muriu (12. August 2021)

Hello,

I don’t mean change the straps I wanted to know if it were possible for the end of the strap that’s attached to the bag to be moved higher. - picture for reference

Evelyne Wanjiku (12. August 2021)

Thank you Nimu,

I get you now. However that means we undo the bag and unfortunately the places where the stitch passed might be visible. We also apply glue before stitching and that's hard to remove from the fabric

Would you like is to instead of redoing it, make another bag for you? If so kindly share precise measurements of how you would like the handles. Looking forward to hearing from you..

Nimu Muriu (12. August 2021)

hello,

I don't think we have time to make another bag as I needed to travel with it tomorrow afternoon.
May you please put the label like the picture attached with the initials AWM and the same font as pictured. - but rectangular and smaller a small rectangular piece of cloth or leftover leather I think could work.

Evelyne Wanjiku (14. August 2021)

Dear Nimu,

I hope you are well..

Kindly share your delivery address so the bag can be sent over to you.

Best regards,

Eva
