Custom Cypress Cutlery Tray With Knife Blocks was made by Brian Ng'aru as a fitted wooden drawer insert for organizing cutlery and kitchen knives in one place. This completed project is a useful example for anyone considering a custom cutlery tray with dedicated knife storage, exact drawer sizing, and a food-safe finish.
- Request: A made-to-measure cutlery tray was needed for a specific kitchen drawer, with separate sections for everyday cutlery plus two integrated knife blocks for large and small knives.
- Final result: The finished insert was built in cypress wood with a food-safe clear lacquer, combining multiple cutlery compartments with one large knife block holding 10 knife slots and one smaller knife block holding 5 slots.
- Design details: The tray was sized to fit a drawer at approximately 47.2 cm by 52.4 cm, with a total height of 5.4 cm, slim divider walls, and a layout planned around both long utensils and safely separated knife blades and handles.
- Fit and use: This kind of organizer helps keep a wide drawer tidy, protects knife edges, and makes it easier to store cooking knives and table cutlery together without loose movement.
- Process: Public progress updates showed material preparation, sanding, joining, finishing, and final photos, and the completed tray was later confirmed to fit perfectly and match the intended look.

A request by a customer from
Custom-made cutlery tray. Length: 47.2 cm. Width: 52.4 cm. Height: 5.4 cm. Compartment division: Individual. Ladies and gentlemen,
The cutlery tray including knife blocks is to be fitted in a Blum Legrabox drawer.
The thickness of the cutlery tray base should be 4 mm.
The sketch assumes a width of 9 mm for the walls of the cutlery tray.
For the small knife block, the space for the blades should be 75mm and the space for the handles 125mm.
The following eight knives should be accommodated in the large knife block (ideally, however, there should be space for two more, i.e. a total of ten slots for ten blades):
1st blade: 25cm | handle: 14cm | handle width: 2.3cm
2nd blade: 21cm | handle: 14cm | handle width: 1.9cm
3rd blade: 20.5cm | handle: 14cm | handle width: 2cm
4th blade: 15.5cm | handle: 12cm | handle width: 1.3cm
5th blade: 13.6cm | handle: 13.5cm | handle width: 2cm
6th blade: 16cm | handle: 12cm | handle width: 2.4cm
7th blade: 16cm | handle: 12cm | handle width: 2.4cm
8th blade: 12.5cm | handle: 12.5cm | handle width: 2.4cm
The blades of the largest knives are 2-3mm thick on the (non-sharp) upper side.
Please send me a corresponding sketch and let me know whether and at what price (depending on the wood used) the cutlery insert can be realized and what adjustments might have to be made and approximately what delivery time (to Munich/Germany) would have to be expected from the time the order is placed.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
